In this webinar, Jennifer Carson and Al Power will discuss their recent literature review of risk factors for COVID outbreaks and deaths in long-term care with an eye toward the future. They will discuss the impact of the pandemic, including the harmful effects of strict quarantines and social isolation. They will outline factors that differentiated some homes from others in their COVID experience, highlighting the recent Green House COVID study. Based on the available research, Jennifer and Al will show that many recommended culture change components provide significant advantages over traditional models of care during a pandemic, and suggest ways to continue safe and meaningful engagement throughout the upcoming holiday season.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the unintended harmful effects of quarantine and social isolation on elders in nursing homes
2. Name at least three structural and/or operational features that have led to better outcomes during the pandemic
3. Use the evidence to challenge conventional thinking around dementia-specific housing
4. Suggest ways to negotiate risk while optimizing meaningful engagement in the coming months
