Construction of St. John’s first Green House homes began in December 2010. These suburban homes will be the first in the nation designed to bring elders back into the communities they call home or where their families still reside. The first two community Green House homes will be located in Penfield, NY. Each house will be home to ten elders in a residential setting. Occupancy will begin in fall 2011. Construction on the Henrietta, NY site is slated to begin in spring 2011 with occupancy planned for early 2012. Additional sites around Monroe County are under consideration for future community Green House homes.

Sponsoring Organization History
St. John’s was founded in 1899 by the German-American community in the Protestant tradition to serve the poor and the elderly. St. John’s first home, a Victorian house, provided a cohesive, cultural, comfortable, family-like environment for ten residents, an alternative to the local hospitals and institutions serving this population. Today, St. John’s, Rochester ‘s and New York State’s only registered Eden Alternative nursing home, provides adult day services, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, palliative and dementia care. Our ongoing metamorphosis requires a personal, operational and structural transformation. In the next few years, we will reconstruct one floor on our main campus into two urban-style Green House homes and build additional Green House homes in surrounding communities.
