The Green House Core Values
Transforming the Culture of Long-Term Care
Dr. Bill Thomas, cofounder of The Eden Alternative®, will never forget the words of an elder at the nursing home where he worked, or the blue eyes that stared up at him as she whispered,
“I am so lonely.”
In that moment, Dr. Thomas was awakened to the plagues that afflict so many people in nursing homes: loneliness, helplessness and boredom. Together with his wife, Jude, he created a philosophy and principles to infuse growth and life into traditional nursing homes … and the Eden Alternative was born.
But then he imagined, “What if I had a clean sheet of paper?” What would be the ideal environment for these principles to thrive?
And The Green House® model took root.
A Green House home is created from the ground up to foster the same feeling and experience you get from living in a real home.
Each home is designed for 10-12 residents, keeping it flexible and maintaining a warm feel. The comfort of private rooms and bathrooms are combined with the family-like atmosphere of open common spaces.
And, an innovative staff model gives residents four times more contact and reduces staff turnover.
